 False Media in History

There are many examples throughout history of the utilization of false media. These are only three examples:

  • 1938: The Columbia Broadcasting Network aired a version of the 1898 novel War of the Worlds by HG Wells as if it were real. The story was aired over the radio as a series of events such as asteroids falling and killing people as well as alien pods landing on Earth which led many listeners to panic and prepare for a counterattack.

  • 2019: A recent study found over 2000 COVID-19-related rumors, stigma, and conspiracy theories in 25 languages from 87 different countries. Upon investigation, it was found that 82% of these were false.

  • 2024: Fact Checkers found that a lot of viral posts on social media showing military footage of the war were taken from a video game. Czech game studio Bohemia Interactive came out and said that their game was being "falsely used as footage" from the Gaza conflict. The company’s PR manager explains how serious the false media is "With every video taken down, ten more are uploaded each day.”
